What's your idea of "free range meat"? A few weeks back, after recording Ep 1 of the Precision Unloaded podcast, Graeme and I accompanied Mark on a thermal pest control mission on his farm. We went to a spot where the pigs had been wrecking a paddock and it wasn't long before Mark had two hefty sows on deck. The generous host that he is, he let me take home the biggest one (120 lbs) and the team at Counties Custom Killing went to work producing some excellent sausage (chorizo, and also manuka honey and hickory) and stacks of bacon. Last night's left over BBQ turned into tonight's creamy chorizo pasta, which was pretty damned delicious. Field to fork is extremely satisfying, great for pest control / herd management, and ultimately much more humane for the animals that become our food.

6.5 vs 308, does it matter if your DOPE is good? The average 308 load will do what the average 6.5 will do, however the 6.5 will have a third less drop and a third less wind. Definitely an advantage, especially if you're maxing out your scope. However, in terms of making hits, it's all just maths at the end of the day. In this photo we have my 260 Ackley Improved in the foreground, and Graeme's 308 in the background. Both Howa barreled actions in Boyd's stocks. This was the first trip for this particular 308 to the 1km line, and it took 3 hits to get the first impact. Our wind estimation was OK, but about 1 MOA off. Elevation was good, having been verified at 600m. Once Graeme was on, he was ringing steel consistently. My turn. The wind was gusting the same, so it was pretty simple, dial up my elevation and hold 2/3 of what Graeme did for wind. He had exactly 5 MOA, so some quick maths tells us that's 3.3 MOA for me, close enough to 1 MRAD. Hold 1 Mil right, send it. First round impact. Had we been shooting in the opposite order, results would have been exactly the same as we figured out our wind. We did try get out to a mile that day, but the farm was too wet and we could not spot our misses, making wind calls impossible. Even the 300 Win Mag wasn't throwing up any splash.
